My Journey to a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science at UAB

A Journey of Growth, Friendship, and Overcoming Challenges at the University of Alabama at Birmingham

Moving from Nepal to the United States was a monumental decision in my life, one driven by the pursuit of higher education and personal growth. When I chose the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) for my Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, I knew I was embarking on a path filled with challenges and opportunities. The decision to study at UAB was influenced by the presence of my brother in Alabama, providing me with a sense of familiarity and support in an otherwise unfamiliar environment.

2021 graduation from UAB

My experience at UAB was transformative in more ways than one. Initially, I was a shy student, hesitant to speak in public—a trait that stemmed from my time in Nepal. But life at UAB had different plans for me. During my time there, I became a Teaching Assistant (TA) for four different courses over the span of three years. This was something I never imagined I would do. Taking on the role of a TA forced me out of my comfort zone and pushed me to turn my shyness into a strength.

Being a TA was more than just a job; it was a gateway to numerous opportunities. It allowed me to connect with professors on a deeper level, building relationships that enriched my academic experience. I also found myself in a close-knit community with fellow students, and the interactions I had with them helped me break down cultural barriers and become more socially confident. The friendships I formed during this time were invaluable, helping me to bridge the gap between two very different cultures.

My time there was made even more special by the presence of other Nepalese students. Most of them were pursuing either PhDs or Master’s degrees, which meant they were older and more experienced than I was. Being surrounded by such a mature and knowledgeable group made me feel safe and supported, both academically and personally.

Finally, after four years of hard work, I graduated in December 2021 with a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and a Minor in Mathematics. Looking back, I am immensely grateful for the journey. UAB was not just an institution where I earned a degree; it was a place where I grew as a person, overcame personal challenges, and built a foundation for my future.

To all my friends, professors, and especially my Birmingham family—thank you for making these four years unforgettable. The experiences and memories we created together will always hold a special place in my heart.
